Speed Builder: a 6-week treadmill plan to run a faster 5K
Speed Builder is for runners who can already cover 5K and want to get quicker. Each week mixes easy runs, one interval session with hard efforts of one to five minutes, and a long run that builds to 45 minutes. Together they improve both your speed and your stamina.

Tips for Speed Builder
- Keep the easy runs easy. They make the hard sessions possible.
- In interval sessions, choose a speed you can hold for every rep, not just the first one.
- Put your long run on the day you have most time.
Speed Builder questions
How do I run a faster 5K on a treadmill?
Combine easy running with regular interval sessions. Short, hard efforts teach your body to run faster, and the easy runs build the endurance to hold that pace for 5K. Speed Builder schedules both for you.
How many days a week is Speed Builder?
Four sessions a week for five weeks, then three in the final week: 23 sessions in total, lasting 25 to 56 minutes.
What speed should I use for the hard intervals?
Somewhere around your best 5K pace or a little faster. You should finish each rep breathing hard but able to start the next one after the walking recovery.
